A country mile of musical tradition separates the boys quaffing 3.2 in sawdust-covered bars and the freaks and sophisticates who haunt the soho bistros of New York, but from Kay Cee, Mo. to Max's Kansas City in Manhattan, everybody and his country uncle is talking about wailing, wayfaring Waylon Jennings.
Few were surprised when this country performer from Littlefield, Texas scored so big in New York. Waylon's blazed a trail or two in his time, trying something different and making it work. He delighted the crowds at the early Crickets' concerts and later charmed audiences at any number of Opry get-togethers.
Fact is, he's still a blend of Buddy Holly and Ernest Tubb, still a versatile, searching talent who moves easily and gracefully among all the varieties of country music-traditional ballads, nostalgic blues, new-fangled hillbilly... you name it, he does it.
A ruggedly handsome man, an unpredictable outlaw of an artist, his appearance betrays the subtle, sensitive innards of the poet. And it's the feeling spirit that emerges in this album, especially on such traditional cuts as Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line, Stop the World (And Let Me Off), Rings of Gold and Another Bridge to Burn.
They say Waylon knows whereof he croons while singing Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line. We'll believe it when we see it. This old boy's specialty is crossing lines, not walking 'em. And this LP will show you exactly how beautifully he does it!
