It is interesting, of course, to know that Johann Strauss came of a likely line of descent: a grand- father who maintained a beer-garden and dance-hall; a father (Johann, Sr.) who himself wrote impassioned waltzes, galops, polkas, marches, etc., and brought them to all Europe in the course of tours at the head of his own orchestra.

Interesting, too, to know that the younger Strauss had to overcome professional jealousy on the part of his father to embark on his own fabulous musical career. That Strauss, Jr., performed not only in the major cities of Europe, but also in the Boston and New York of the 1870's.

And it certainly does not impede our liking for Strauss's music to recall that it was composed for the bright, cosmopolitan, courtly society of the good old Vienna of the mid-nineteenth century.

All well and good. But we don't need to know any of the above. In the sound of Strauss's music we find appeal, explanation, gratification, thrill, all in one. To invite the Musical Arts Symphony Orchestra into your home (via this Concert-Disc recording) is to fill your living-room, your ears, your consciousness, with a renewed feeling of the lightness, the rightness of life.

It's good just to sit and listen to this music. But, if you want to use these selections as a bubbling background to a party, to easy-going, friendly conversation; if you want to dance to it, go right ahead. For this is live music in the best sense of the word, artistic, entertaining, and firmly rooted in the daily life of people who enjoy living.
